Understanding Today’s Historic Cattle Market Prices

Many of our shareholders may not realize just how dramatically cattle prices have risen across the United States in recent years. Even within the conventional cattle industry — including large-scale, nonorganic, feedlot-based production systems — cattle producers are currently receiving some of the highest market prices ever recorded for livestock sold through cattle auction markets and commercial cattle channels.

For example, in today’s market conditions, it is not uncommon for a conventional 550-pound stocker calf to bring approximately $2,500 at cattle markets in certain regions of the country. These types of prices would have seemed almost unimaginable just several years ago.

Why Conventional Cattle Prices Have Increased So Dramatically

Several major factors are contributing to these historic cattle prices nationwide:

Declining national cattle herd numbers

Multi-year drought conditions in major cattle-producing states

Rising feed and grain costs

Increased fuel and transportation expenses

Higher labor and operational costs

Strong ongoing consumer demand for beef

Reduced overall beef supply availability

As fewer cattle are available nationwide, competition for calves and feeder cattle has intensified dramatically.

Even conventional cattle raised in industrial systems are now commanding historically high prices simply because cattle supply has tightened so significantly across the United States.

What This Means for Regenerative Grassfed Beef Farms like Ours

For regenerative farms like Foothill Frolic Farm on Gammon Creek, these rising cattle market values directly affect the overall economics of raising livestock responsibly and sustainably.

When conventional cattle producers are receiving historically high market prices for conventionally raised calves and feedlot cattle, it naturally raises the overall baseline value of cattle across the industry.

At the same time, regenerative grassfed and grassfinished farms often face even greater production challenges and costs because we intentionally choose slower, more labor-intensive, and more ecologically responsible farming methods.

Unlike conventional systems that may rely heavily on grain finishing, confinement feeding operations, pharmaceutical interventions, and industrialized management systems, our farm prioritizes:

100% grassfed and grassfinished nutrition

Chemical-free pasture systems

Regenerative grazing management

Long-term soil health improvement

Holistic livestock management

Ethical animal stewardship

Low-input natural farming methods

These practices require tremendous amounts of time, observation, land management, rotational grazing planning, fencing systems, and hands-on daily care.

Why Our Pricing Must Reflect True Farming Costs

As cattle values continue rising nationwide, it becomes increasingly important for regenerative farms to price their products in ways that honestly reflect the true costs of producing premium-quality beef responsibly.

While we always strive to keep our Custom Beef Shares affordable and competitive for families, we also must ensure that our pricing supports:

Long-term farm sustainability

Continued regenerative land improvements

Proper livestock care

Infrastructure maintenance

Rising processing costs

Fair compensation for labor and time invested into the farm

Our family sacrifices an enormous amount to operate this farm with integrity and high standards, and we believe it is important that truly regenerative farming operations remain economically sustainable for future generations.

Exceptional Value Despite Rising Markets

Even with rising cattle prices nationwide, many of our shareholders still receive exceptional value through our Custom Beef Share program.

When comparing the quality, production standards, nutritional integrity, and ethical farming practices behind our beef versus conventional grocery store beef, we believe our shareholders continue receiving an outstanding product at a highly competitive overall value.

In a time when even conventional feedlot beef and conventional stocker cattle are reaching historic highs in pricing, we remain deeply committed to producing beef that reflects a far higher standard of stewardship, transparency, ecological responsibility, and nutritional quality.
