Black Angus Steer

August 13th Processing Date

(Second Harvest Round)

Born on 3-11-23

Seems like one always remembers very clearly the first calf of the season.  He was born to a first time Mamma, Flurry, one of our saved Heifers.  The day was clear, bright and still cool like it is often in early March.  Flurry was down by the creek in the back Gammon bottom and when I came upon them she had already had her calf.  Almost immediately after finding the pair a blue heron flew right over all of us, so close that I felt as if I could have reached up and touched the bird.  Flurry proved herself very well as Heron Boy turned into a lovely steer.  He was one that would hang close as if he wished to have first hand attention, but never could bring himself to acquiring my full on contact.

A bull calf given the name of a spring flowering tree would be destined to be beautiful I think.  He came from one of my Dad's favorite Cows, Pet, G7, a Baldy (black body white face, which results in the breeding of Hereford and Angus breeds).  The Redbuds were in full bloom in 2023.  I always kept a good eye on him as I knew he was going to be nice from the start.  Sometimes that is clear and sometimes it takes a while to see how a calf grows and develops.  He had very sweet eyes.  His face had a lot of Hereford characteristic to it, and oh was he shiny.  He had that burnt auburn highlighting within his black which made his coat extra beautiful.  He had a nice high tail and a long middle and never all too bulky but very muscular all at the same time.

St. Patty is what I would call a big and beautiful girl.  She was long and low to the ground.  Her Mamma is an old time special marked Baldy cow, G5, and St. Patty inherited her neat look and well built stature.   It can be very difficult to photo capture cattle in their best position, and with the best lighting, but this photo turned out so well.  As I do not go out to the field to spend an hour with each animal, as if I was a professional photographer, often I have to do the best I can to work through many animals  in about that same amount of time.   The photo really represents how good looking she was and captures her pretty face and eyes.  I liked St. Patty a lot!

Contented Core was born to one of our tried and true, older Hereford Cows G9.  We only have left about 9 Hereford colored breeding cows left in our main breeding herd and we are always so proud of their offspring.  I can remember giving "Contented Core" his name back in his first month of life in 2023 when I was out in the field checking the herd. He was curled right up in front of his loving Mamma, looking ever so content, hence "Contented Core". From a young age he was good looking and sizable, but come this summer, his coat and build were most impressive.  He was very thick and stout, both in body and heart! In fact, this whole 2023 boy/steer herd has such a congenial presence that it is ,hard not to adore about each one of them and even after they are gone to be gracious and thankful for them for a long time to come.

I love how names help bring me back to these grown up 2 year olds birth.  For example, since I named him Black Gum Dawn,  an image of the old broken off Black Gum Tree at a corner along a fence comes to mind and there he lies new born with his beautiful Reddish Brown Mamma "Brown Beauty".  Brown Beauty got her name for obvious reasons as she was the prettiest Reddish Brown Cow in the old Lacy Herd.  Since then she has had a daughter named "Holiday" that we saved and they together make a tremendous pair.  Of course Brown Beauty is getting some age on her, and one can say that Holiday has stepped up to gain recognition of the name, but all in all "Brown Beauty" gets to keep it and still holds her own very well!!  Black Gum Dawn's frame and mass always looked so proportional. He had a very masculine look and seemed to be most similar to his 2023 brother, Contented Core, and was probably because they both came from Hereford colored mammas.

It was a cool and cloudy early spring day back in March of 2023 when this calf was born to her Mamma, Twin Mamma, G34.  Out of the three calves born on this day, this is the one birth that I actually got to witness, as opposed to just finding the pair together later.  Twin Mamma, unusually so, decided just to have her calf right in the center of a group of cows and it was almost as if they were all watching as well, in a grouped ring.  Ring of Fire came out large and sleek from the get go, as I remember thinking that right when I first saw the calf drop to the ground.  Other than being very prime and pretty, she did not have anything distinctive about her personality, but so it goes, nor does her well conditioned Mamma.  Some cattle more or less exist and exist extremely well, without having a bell and whistle type of personality.

Oh this girl has a sweet story, as she lost her Mamma, Dear Patches, when she was 7 months old.  Dear Patches was a good ole beautiful Baldy that lived her life out to the complete fullest here at Foothill Frolic Farm.  She produced nice calves down to the last one she had, By and By.  Dear Patches got to the point where her hip went and she could not and would not get up, so she had to be put down.  By and By stayed by her Momma's side even after she passed. By and By always had a sweet nature.  Seemed like she would always be there in the herd to glean a glance and make a connection.  When she was a calf, I did not see the resemblance in stature and frame to her Mamma, but as she grew and got older, other than not being a Baldy, she indeed was very much a replica.  In particular, the flat back, thick rump, stocky built, thick legs, and sure footing.

Double 23 was this from the start as he dropped onto the pasture on the 23rd day of March in the year of 23.  As I have learned over the last 5 years, any calf of his Mamma, L10, is destined to be a prize winner.  She has birthed TN Walker Steer, Duck Seven Heifer, Double 23 Steer, Opal Trotter Heifer, and up to current Tandem Talent Heifer.  This observation really just came clear this year, as it can take half a decade to come to conclusive hunches on genetic lines at best.  Double 23, Quick Whitt, and Cap Garland in the current herd of steers always were great pals and all three of them were sweet hearts of attention.  Each one came from 3 of our top cows, which is interesting in how they each loved to be petted once weened.  Double 23 was long and tall and had a very beautiful face for a steer.  He was never in a rush and walked with much ease and grace.

Golden Bandanna was born to our youngest Hereford Mammas, G19.  She is an average looking, sweet faced Mamma that has proved to have some wonderful genetics that always come forth in to her calves.  I think she raised the largest of our calves that was born the year prior in 2022, whom was Prancing Hoof.   I can remember being able to recognize  Golden Bandanna very well as he grew from a calf into a yearling and this was lucky as he lost his tag in the January snows of 2023 in a metal trellis and I knew exactly who the non tagged calf was before I even found the tag laying a top the snow beside the garden trellis.  He seemed to always be a bit bashful with a very non showy type of personality.  He seemed to be one that would have always been true and done what was expected of him, despite his own needs or wants.  As a 2 year old he had a very shiny coat and really was a stand out in appearance and size, even though he did not care that he was, very modest!

Lucky Ledge was found in the nick of time by Dad and I right after his  birth resting on the tinniest sliver of a ledge on the creek bank.  His Mamma G25 had her head pointed over the bank intently looking and making those gently bawling noises like new Mammas do, so I went running and there the shiny new calf laid.  It was a cool morning and I remember Dad and I both getting wet as we had trouble getting him hoisted back up to flat land because he was a very large calf and he had not been well licked off yet and was slick.  He was one to never seek out attention, but all at the same time he was mild mannered and well built.  His frame and build was all very well proportioned, as if he was even in every direction.

With the name of Lizzie Light, what else could be expected but to be radiant and carefree and that she was.  She didn't seem to mind what others thought, and she was often in the front of the herd bounding and looking for new grass and hay prospects.   Time and time again, it seems as if I find tiny nuances that pair mamma cow and offspring together.  I can picture "Lizzie Light's Momma, G31, leaping and bounding down the hillside with much energy and excitement.

Lizzy Light was very thick and full bellied

Blue Ribbon was born to our most beautiful Baldy, "Christmas Mamma", L2,  that originated from what we called the Lacy Herd.  She always looked Perfect and Shiny in the pastures.  I remember seeing him laying with Christmas Mamma for the first time with his beautiful and unique facial markings and new he would win a prize at the fair so he became Blue Ribbon.  Some of our all time best steers have this type of particular unique facial markings.  I prefer this look even over the complete white face of a baldy, but of course this is just a personal opinion and does not change the value or flavor or quality of the custom beef.  Blue Ribbon had the most agreeable personality.  Very mild mannered and poised for a steer.

Oh Beacon Plum, go figure, he certainly more than any other steer in this herd grew into this name.  With his shiny coat and plum like black color, one could spot him coming from a mile away. He is an example of how moderate sized, mid framed Angus Mamma Cows can produce stellar calves.  His Mamma is G4 and she for certain is not the largest cow of the herd, but she carries a mighty punch.  I have always figured she produces abundant and rich milk.  Beacon Plum did not start out as one that enjoyed attention, but by the end he enjoyed his rubs.  He had the personality that always kept him close and around when out in the field.  He was full, long, and very strong.  An all around eye turner.

Dandy's Pick was born when the Dandelions were in full bloom out in the pasture to one of our favorite Baldy cows, L4.  He had such a spunky and full on personality from the start.  He spun and jumped and galloped and romped.  Just like children, animals core constituent of personality and being run through life, so he always was a bowl full of energy.  Being a weened calf he sought our attention and enjoyed it, but as he got older and kept weighing more and more till he was finally 1,200 lbs, his playful ways were a little rough for us human 100 pounders.  He never understood he was just too big to play!  Because of this we always had to be mindful of where he was in the herd to make sure he did not catch us off guard.  He probably got us all once, but only in play, not in a mean pursuit.  All in all Dandy was the finest Pick and had the fullest personality of the whole herd.  Strong looks and strong personality--He will be one we all will remember for life, I am sure of it!!

Sometimes, not enough words can be written to express the aptitude of certain animal's beings.  Cap Garland entered the herd back in 2023 and he was attractive from the start since he came from one of our best mamma cows, "High Tail" L15.  The beings and personalities of the calves start to unfold from day one, but it seems like we really start to understand them to the fullness from weening point forward.  Cap Garland, Quick Whitt, and Double 23 were probably our three largest steers at weening point for that season and for some reason all 3 of those steers immediately sought out our personal attention when we were feeding them hay.  It seems like every season we will have a a few animals that are born with this nature.  It has nothing to do with the way we are with them or training of any sorts, as the calves just make it a point to start approaching and then as they do start to receive rubs and pets, from that point forward they are forever sweethearts.  Seems like Cap Garland and Quick Whitt appreciated the companionship of each other as well.  As a 2 year old, Cap Garland was beautiful and so hearty and nicely filled out, very very dense.   despite him weighing well over 1,200 lbs we could give him a big hug around the neck and could scratch and rub on him really anywhere and he would just stand there and take it all in.  Within the full circle relationship amongst animal, farmer, and consumer,  we are so very grateful that we also get to form relationships with our customers enough to know that the families that receive beef shares from us really respect and are just as thankful and appreciative of these beautiful cattle beings as we are in the raising of them.  If this full circle did not connect for me then I could not do what we do.

Switchback came from one of our Gammon Herd's good Ol' Baldys, G18 and he kind of carried on in the way in which she does...Sure and Steady and Firm.    He had a really exceptional fine build and frame and the best looking Round area.  His coat was very shiny and had a fair amount of auburn coloration to his black.  When he was younger he would swing around in open field and do a back kick, which got him his name Switchback.  He also seemed to form tight bonds with the other animals of the herd.  When he was just a yearling during our 2024-2025 custom beef season, when we would harvest the 2 year olds, he was always the last to turn around and leave the temporary in field corral area.  He would always have his senses attune to the harvest group's departure, wanting to say goodbye more than any of the other steers.

Mystic was our first April calf, back in the calving season of 2023.  She was born to a tall Baldy Mamma, G32, that seems mysterious. Mystic seemed a natural name to roll off the tongue , as G32 and her calfs always seem to be slightly aloof.   Mystic grew to be very tall and long and didn't stay aloof forever.  She liked to make herself seen, as I would notice her multiple times when being around the heifer herd.

Shinook blew into existence from a first time saved heifer Black Angus Mamma named "Trixy".  As I often watch new mamma's more closely when their birthing starts, since they have no tract record, "Trixy sure took her sweet time.  She paced and paced around the particular paddock the herd was in at the time.  Shinook's hooves stuck out for a while, at least 1hour and 1/2.  Even though I kept my feelings to myself, I was getting a little nervous for her.  The darkness had come upon us and it was cold, so to take a break and give her complete space, I came back to the house and got some hot tea and headlamp and by the time I had gotten back to the field there the pair was well, strong, and content.  At the time for homeschool we must have been reading the old native tell of the Chinook the North Wind and wanted to pass on this name, but with a different version of spelling.  Well, Shinook grew to be our tallest steer of the 2023 calving season and that height came even without a high tail, just unbelievably long legs and massive frame.  For some reason his personality was like an overgrown sweetheart.

Where ever else would a steer that is named Tip Top be born, but on the very tip top of our highest hill.  Because I took an image of the scene, I can still picture in my mind Boss Cow walking off the top of our back hill with her new calf in which I named instantly Tip Top.  Tip Top was distinctive in his herd group because he seemed to have the darkest black fur coat of the herd.  He lacked any of the auburn highlights that some of our cattle take on because of the Baldy and Hereford influences.  His personality seemed to present itself in a very anchored and down to earth way.  He really grew tremendously this year and ended up being in the top 3 of the beef animal sizes thus far, all time and for this season.   He was tall and very well muscled and proportioned on his frame.

Moon Course had extra moon power I suppose because he got his name because both he and his Mamma, G15, has the double moon rotation around each of their eyes.  As we adhere to the the strengths, pulls, and powers of the Moon here on the farm I often am thinking of the Moon and its courses and cycles.  I love Baldy's and so it is extra special when a Baldy Mamma Cow has a Baldy Calf.  I like Baldy's because they represent the closest genetic tie our herd still has to it's Hereford origin.  Moon Course has been a sheer delight to watch grow up into a 2 year old.  He had an inner warmth and courageous presentation is his walk and gallop.

His build was that of a high tail and swooped belly and these characteristics always make for wonderful beefs.

Scottish Loch always seemed old world, like he would have been a heritage breed angus that came directly from Aberdeen, Scotland.  See his mamma has that appearance too and she has had a major presence in our herd over the last 15-18 years I would reckon. I named her calf born in 2024 Highland Strong.  Again,  just because they always seem so old world.  Interestingly so, Scottish Lock ended up having stub horns that are not visible in his photo here, but at certain angles can certainly be seen.  They would have never grown more than a couple of inches, but I thought that seemed like such a confirmative indicator of my hunch that G17's line seems so old world.  Scottish Loch was very sweet and mild and such a Mamma's boy.  His build is a little shorter and more stocky than the bulk of our steers.  This though does not effect at the slightest his frame or proportion of muscle.  Thicker, stockier steers actually look fuller and beefier than taller ones, as there legs are just not as tall.
